The Unforgettable History of Belen, New Mexico

Belen was established in 1741 when two Spaniards settled the land known as the "Belen Grant". It took nearly 50 years for Belen to grow from a lone fort on Rio Grande into a small city center. The first railway reached Belen from Santa Fe in 1880. By 1907, the Belen Cutoff was built allowing for many more trains to travel east and west across the United States. Incorporated in 1918, the "Village of Belen" became a major refueling station in the Southwest region of the US. This "Hub City" history remains today, as over 100 trains travel through Belen daily.

Currently, Belen is home to the only Railway Museum in New Mexico. The Harvey House Museum has a rich history of its own. Opened in 1910, Harvey House was originally a franchised restaurant where weary rail passengers could get a good meal. Today, Harvey House is one of the few places where you can learn about the Santa Fe Railway and one of America's first restaurant chains.
